History

What are the issues?

We have all heard of the 'global economy' and 'globalisation' -- buzz words that are supposed to mean everybody is becoming more wealthy.
In fact it's not true!!

Did you know that:

·  World trade increasingly benefits rich countries while the poor get poorer!

·  Less developed countries have 80% of the world’s population, yet only 28% of the world’s trade.

·  Producers of crops such as coffee may receive less for their crops than it has cost to produce them.

·  The drive for low prices and high profits by the multinational supplier companies often results in low wages, poor working conditions and lack of job security for the producers.

·  Many producer countries are poorer than the large transnational companies which operate within them and some have to put the needs of the transnationals before the needs of their own people.

So what is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a partnership between producers and consumers which ensures:

·  Good working conditions

·  Fair prices for producers

·  Environmental responsibility

·  Commitment to long term relationships to provide stability and security

·  Campaigning to highlight the unequal system of world trade.

·  ·  Fair Trade also promotes:

·  Social development projects

·  Empowerment of women

·  Advice on product development

Can I make a difference?

Yes you can!!

You can:

·  Support fair trade companies through retail outlets such as Just Sharing  and other BAFTS shops.

·  Join the campaigns to change the rules of world trade so that they give more benefit to the poor, such as the Christian Aid Trade for Life

·  Campaign and the Trade Justice Movement

·  Help the work of Traidcraft’s charity, Traidcraft Exchange.
